“And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news (the Gospel) to every creature [of the whole human race].” –Mark 16:15, Amplified Bible
The command of Jesus is still in effect. “Go!” is the mandate for every believer, every church. For way too long we have turned His “Go!” to our pathetic, “Come…”
Come to the service of your choice: traditional, contemporary or blended. Or it may be…Come to our no-more-than-one-hour-seeker-friendly-non-churchy gatherings where you will be entertained and coddled by our watered-down-power-point-accented-self-help-sermonettes and vignettes. Our cappuccinos are hot, our preacher is not. Our loud praise band will be rockin’ and knockin’ your socks off, if you choose to wear ‘em. Just come as you are. It’s okay to wear your rattiest jeans, doesn’t matter what else as long as you are generally covered. If you have kids, we’ll entertain them too so you can relax and enjoy the show. And when it’s all over for this week, you can walk out the same way you came in, though maybe–just maybe–your experience with us today may get you at least starting to think about a “Jesus” very unlike the Jesus of the Bible. And if want to know more, we offer plenty of easy going self help classes during the week. How about signing up for “Yoga: Jesus Style”?
If this is what we are coming to, there are only two problems: 1) It is wrong…and…2) God is sick and tired of it!
“Bring no more offerings of vanity—emptiness, falsity, vainglory and futility; [your hollow offering of] incense is an abomination to Me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies I cannot endure, it is iniquity and profanation, even the solemn meeting.”
“Take away from Me the noise of your songs; for I will not listen to the melody of your harps.” -Isaiah 1:13 & Amos 5:23 Amplified Bible
Most of what we as the church are coming to has got to go! By our claims of relevance and rightly rejecting empty, dead, traditional liturgies and “the form of godliness” without the power, we have substituted something just as bad, if not worse.
Meanwhile, most of the people around us, and many in our churches, are still going to hell unabated!
Jesus Christ ordained a motley group of apostles, “sent ones”. Today Jesus is still looking for and preparing a Kingdom force of fiery warriors He can confidently send to places and people most Christians would not touch with a ten-foot pole. He wants royal band of soldiers who are in the world, not of it, who will be salt in the most corrupt places and light in the darkest places on the planet.
We have messed around in the mess halls of our churches long enough. It is time we load our spiritual weapons and go into the great battlefields in the mighty power of the Holy Spirit to really get through to the hearts of people with His gospel of genuine love, absolute truth and bonafide miracles. It is time for an all out gospel invasion into the offices, stores, streets, schools and bars. It is time to go to the new age festivals, the single mothers and fathers, the orphans, the homeless and the homosexuals. It is time to go to the Hindus, the Muslims, the Catholics, the evangelicals, the cultists, the movie stars, the rock stars and the porn stars. It is time to go to the sick, the poor, the nursing homes, the jaded millennial generation and the kids who don’t have a prayer.
If this is where we are going then our churches will be worth coming to. Why? Our churches will then be what they ought to be. They will be bases of operation for the Kingdom of God. They will be staging, strategizing, sending areas. They will be strongholds of life, love, deliverance, healing, holiness and equipping. Many such churches will be carelessly ignored, opposed hated and rejected. Some of these sent ones will be martyred. The Lord of the Harvest said we all have to– and get to– go. He did not say we all had to come back. But He said He most definitely would return!
Let it be said of you and me in these very last evil days just before His return…
“And they went forth and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” -Mark 16:20
